Abstract
To the Editor: The manufacturers of cholestyramine (Questran) state, "Although hyperchloremic acidosis has not been observed in extensive clinical trials, because Questran is the chloride form of an ion exchange resin, there is the theoretical possibility that its prolonged administration might lead to the development of this condition." A recent observation suggests that in the patient with impaired renal function, metabolic acidosis may occur as a result of cholestyramine administration.A 10 1/2-year-old girl was admitted to the New York Hospital because of acidosis. At four months of age the patient underwent open liver biopsy because of jaundice and hepatomegaly. . . .
