Abstract
The history of chaos pertaining to acoustics is briefly reviewed from the first period-doubling experiments reported by Faraday (vibrated liquid layer) and Melde (string oscillations) to today's investigations on chaos in thermoacoustics, musical instruments, the hearing process, and ultrasonics. A closer analysis is given of the sound produced in a liquid by standing acoustic waves of high intensity. Keywords
