Abstract
In order to remove cyanide ion from wastewater, application of potassium permanganate oxidation was investigated. The proposed method is based on oxidation of cyanide ion by potassium permanganate in alkaline solutions. When this method was applied to industrial wastewater, cyanide ion was almost completely decomposed after 10 min without formation of toxic compounds such as cyanogen chloride . The most effective decomposition was observed at above pH 10 .The decomposition rate by potassium permanganate was similar to that of sodium hypochlorite. The mechanism of oxidatiye decomposition of cyanide ion by potassium permanganate is described in this paper. Keywords
