Abstract
The movement of photosynthetically incorporated carbon down the stem of soybean plants has been studied in vivo using carbon dioxide labelled with the short-lived isotope 11C. The rate of accumulation of radioactivity at several points in the stem was measured during continuous illumination. This accumulation rate quickly became constant and remained so for at least several hours. The effects of stopping photosynthesis, of removing the labelled carbon dioxide, and of different light pretreatments of the plants were investigated. The results are discussed in terms of a flow translocation process and a pool of labelled photosynthate in the upper part of the plant. This publication has 3 references indexed in Scilit:
