The Acidity of Saliva After Ingestion of Carbohydrate-and Acid-Containing Substances

Abstract
The effect of ingestion of carbo-hydrate-containing non-acid substances and of various acidulated beverages on the acidity of the saliva was studied in a group of human subjects. The pH of the saliva was detd. at short intervals of time for a period of 90 min. after ingestion. With the non-acid substances no significant acidity of the saliva occurred at any time. With the acidulated beverages the acidity of the saliva was not high enough nor of sufficient duration to render corrosion of the teeth likely.
