Resistivity of Escherichia coli to Ultraviolet Energy (λ 2537) as Affected by Irradiation of Preceding Cultures

Abstract
Studies were made to determine the possible variation in tolerance to u.-v. energy (X2537) by strains of E. coli that were irradiated prior to incubation. Subcultured irradiated strains were able to survive approx. twice the dosage tolerated by the previously unirradiated control strains. Several biochemical differences were observed between the irradiated strains and the control strains. The changes observed seemed to persist after repeated subculturing without additional irradiation .
