Abstract
A study to obtain information on accidents involving slipping, tripping and falling on the level (STFL) using Health and Safety Executive (HSE) data is reported and the scope for preventative action is discussed. An analysis of accidents occurring in 1981 and 1982, as notified to the HSE, was undertaken. Each accident involved absence from work of at least 3 days and all sectors of employment were included. A wide variation in accident incidence rate was discovered between different industrial sectors. Variations were also apparent between employers of different size. The injuries arising were frequently serious and an incidence rate rising in direct proportion to increasing age was noted. The costs to the nation are thought to exceed £150 million annually from STFL accidents. In discussing possible strategies for the preventions of these accidents it is recognized that there is no simple solution. It is necessary for each employer to examine the problem as it affects his own undertaking and take appropriate action to ensure that the risks are minimized. In this connection a simple accident model is introduced and reference is made to the importance of good housekeeping, appropriate systems of work, proper selection, care and maintenance of floors and, where safety footwear is worn, the need for the selection of the most suitable shoe sole for the conditions. Keywords
