Abstract
Experiments and observations were carried out to study the reactions of the sea-urchins Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis and Psammechinus miliaris to various biotic and abiotic stimuli. The sea-star Marthasterias glacialis elicits a typical running response in Strongylocentrotus whereas Psammechinus defends itself with the aid of its poisonous globiferous pedicellariae. The two sea-urchins exhibit similar behaviour, however, when subjected to mechanical stimuli or to stimuli by animals which do not feed on them. Keywords
