Abstract
New Orleans—The new buzz phrase regarding cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus is "metabolic syndrome." Some researchers say an epidemic of metabolic syndrome is sweeping the nation. They warn that about one third of the US population has the syndrome and face increased risk for developing heart problems and diabetes and that its prevalence is growing, due to the obesity epidemic. As obesity (especially abdominal obesity) becomes more common, so does the metabolic syndrome and its associated conditions—dyslipidemia, hypertension, and glucose intolerance. Genetic predisposition, lack of exercise, and aging are also factors .Keywords
