Thiamine-Dependent Beriberi in the “Thiamine-Responsive Anemia Syndrome”

Abstract
IN 1969 Rogers et al. described a case of unexplained anemia in association with diabetes mellitus and sensorineural deafness.1 The anemia responded only to pharmacologic closes of thiamine. Another such case of "thiamine-responsive anemia" was reported by Viana and Carvalho in 1978,2 and two additional cases were presented by Haworth et al. in 1982.3 We describe a three-month-old girl who presented with severe anemia, diabetes, and deafness, all of which improved with high-dose thiamine treatment.
