Abstract
— The application of regression methods to the postcranial measurements of Australopithecus and Homo permitted the estimation of their statures, in spite of the obvious difficulties represented by extrapolating such equations, based on actual Man, to fossil Hominids. This paper presents the synthesis of these data taking into account genetical and environmental factors determining the stature. It demonstrates that the actual human variability appears with the first Homo erectus , reflecting the different genetic pools, adaptability and/ or living conditions of human populations.Résumé. — L'application des méthodes statistiques de régression aux mesures du squelette post-cranien d'Australopithecus et du genre Homo a permis ď estimer leurs statures, malgré les difficultés que soulève l'extrapolation aux Hominidés fossiles des équations basées sur l'Homme actuel. Ce travail présente la synthèse des données en tenant compte des différents facteurs — génétiques et mésologiques — déterminant la stature, et il montre que la variabilité humaine actuelle apparaît avec les premiers Homo erectus, reflétant les différents «genetic pools», adaptabilité et/ou conditions de vie des groupes humains.Garralda M.
