Abstract
A method is described here for determining the probability of obtaining a given electric field on an ion in a plasma. This quantity is essential for computing the broadening of spectral lines from neighboring ions and therefore for their contributions to the opacity. The Pines-Bohm method of separation into longrange Coulomb interactions has been employed. It is argued that the formulas give the line width for iron at one kilovolt and normal density to ±3%.Keywords
