Retrobulbar injn. of alcohol in the rabbit causes dilatation and cessation of the pupillary reflex, due to parasympathetic fiber impairment. After injn. the iris is hypersensitive to acetylbetamethylcholine. Eserine and D. F. P. (diisopropylfluorophosphonate) lose their miotic effect. The effects are temporary in man except where the parasympathetic fibers of the ciliary ganglion are damaged. Here the syndrome resembles Adie''s pupillotonia.
