Abstract
Near-infrared detections of background giants through six Bok globules have been carried out. These have provided information concerning the density structure of the globules, and argue for non-collapsing cores. The gas temperatures required for hydrostatic equilibrium were found to be substantially greater than those actually deduced from observations of $$^{12}\text {CO}$$ antenna temperatures.
