DEVELOPMENT OF TURBULENCE CHARACTERISTICS IN A VERTICAL FREE CONVECTION BOUNDARY LAYER

Abstract
A LDV and a thermocouple (C.A., 12.7 µm dia.) were used to measure the longitudinal and normal components of velocity, U and V, and the temperature, T, in a turbulent free convection boundary layer of air along a vertical flat plate with uniform-heat generation. The profiles of the turbulence quantities,(u'2)1/2, (v'2)1/2,(u'v'), (v't') and (u' t') were measured in the region from very near the plate to the outer extent of the boundary layer for 2×1012 < Grx* < l. 215;1014. Comparison with the previous measurements by hot wire sensors showed clearly the differences between the two measuring methods. Streamwise development of these quantities, the displacement and the enthalpy thickness of the boundary layer were investigated.
