Abstract
A psychiatric examination was done on 120 individuals who had been exposed to various quantities of CS2 gas while working in the viscose rayon industry. Three of the workers were actually psychotic at the time of the examination and all except 14 of the remainder gave some evidence of having been adversely affected to some degree. The acute CS2 intoxications are considered comparable to the narcotic and toxic effects of other gaseous anesthetics of which family CS2 is a member. The survey demonstrates that the toxic psychoses mentioned were directly due to CS2 intoxication. One large group of workers displayed a chronic form of toxic symptoms which were probably due to individual susceptibility to the gas. The toxic syndrome consisted of personality changes (always for the worse), marked irritability, memory defect, insomnia, bad dreams, lessening of libido and constant fatigue. The symptoms usually disappeared when the patient had been removed from the effect of the gas for a few wks. Due to the fact that the chronic patients display some liver damage and a consequent vit. B deficiency a high vit. diet is suggested for these individuals. The validity of the conclusions was demonstrated by animal experimentation.
