Abstract
The oxidation of nitrite by Nitrobacter winogradskyi is restricted to a rather narrow pH range-limited on the acid side by the inhibitory action of nitrous-acid and on the alkaline side by the dissociation of an active site of the enzyme system. Nitrate noncompetitively inhibits the oxidation of nitrite. The relationship between the rate of oxidation and the partial pressure of dissolved O2 has been studied at several temperatures. A discussion of the effect of temperature on the parameters of the rate equations for the oxidation of nitrite is presented. Keywords
