Abstract
Summary In recent years considerable advances have occurred in the laboratory diagnosis of Mycoplasma pneumoniae, due partly to its increased recognition as a significant cause of morbidity. Accurate identification of the aetiological agent is essential, in order to influence patient management and allow initiation of appropriate therapy. Commonly-used techniques, and some of the newer methods currently undergoing evaluation in clinical diagnosis, are discussed. The pitfalls of reliance on established methods, such as the complement fixation test, are highlighted and the need for more careful interpretation of results is emphasized. Keywords
