Abstract
The effect of drugs on synaptic transmission in the crayfish was studied. The synapse used was between a giant fiber in the C.N.S. and a motor fiber in an abdominal root. The action of low concns. of anabasine and nornicotine was to protect the synapse from the action of nicotine; in higher concn. they blocked the synapse. Alcohol, DFP, and eserine in subthreshold doses showed no protection against nicotine and in higher concns. they blocked transmission. Acetylcholine, adrenaline, atropine, coramine, picrotoxin, prostigmine, and strychnine neither protected against nicotine nor blocked synaptic transmission. It was found that after block, transmission returned to normal. A protecting action remained since further doses of nicotine were without effect. Keywords
