A Taxonomic Study of“Clostridium putrificum”and its establishment as a Definite Entity—Clostridium lentoputrescens, Nov. Spec

Abstract
From the historical resume and results of this investigation with so-called Cl. putrificum of Reddish and Rettger, arguments are presented for recognition of this anaerobe as a definite sp. for which the new name Cl. lentoputrescens* (p.511) is proposed. Its allocation in anaerobic classification is discussed, and a method of isolation and cultivation is presented. The value of establishing anaerobiosis in jars with pure CO2 was demonstrated. A comparative morphological, cul-tural and biochemical study of Cl. lentoputrescens and Cl. cochlearum was carried out. Cunningham''s B. putrificus was also considered. Egg-meat medium was in-valuable for preservation of these forms. While some strains of Cl. lentoputrescens exhibited a tendency to vary morphologically, the appearance of the sporulated bacilli was quite constant and characteristic in this medium. An egg-cube gelatin medium was devised, which is well adapted for determination of the gelatinolytic function of anaerobic bacteria. Photomicrographs showing characteristic cell morphology and colonial forms accompany the paper.
