Spinal Cord Injury as a Complication of Elective Anterior Cervical Fusion

Abstract
Injury to the spinal coal as a complication of elective anterior cervical discectomy and interbody fusion is a profound catastrophe for all concerned. Understandably, very little is written on the subject, and the incidence of this problem is not known. The purpose of this article is to report on 3 patients who were transferred to Rancho Los Amigos Spinal Cord Injury Unit within a 6 week period as a result of this hapless situation and to list 7 other instances of this complication which were identified through personal communication and literature search. Possible inferences from these case histories are discussed.
