Fibrinolysins from Gas Gangrene Anaerobes

Abstract
Fibrinolytic enzymes are shown to be produced by all pathogenic gas gangrene species and some non-pathogenic species of Clostridium but not by C. tetani. The fibrinolytic enzyme, like that of hemolytic streptococci, is thermostabile and therefore independent of proteolytic enzymes. Plasma clotting is not a characteristic of gas gangrene clostridia. Anti-fibrinolytic factors were not demonstrated in antitoxins of the clostridia. Presence of fibrinolytic enzyme in gas gangrene wounds suggests that it is a factor in the spread of infection.
