Traumatic Hemomediastinum

Abstract
Hemomediastinum associated with trauma of the thorax has been recognized, but infrequently reported. It is the purpose of this report to reemphasize this entity and direct attention to a method of treatment which has not been described previously. This complication has been recorded in association with numerous entities such as rupture of aortic aneurysm, uremia, typhoid, and hemorrhagic diathesis. A search of the English literature revealed only an occasional report of this condition associated with trauma, and in the absence of some underlying pathologic process.* The incidence of crush injury and "steering-wheel" type of automobile injury of the chest has increased. For this reason, if it is borne in mind, hemomediastinum should be recognized more frequently as an integral part of the over-all trauma. These patients are usually seriously injured, and the utilization of portable roentgenographic technique is required for diagnostic evaluation. Endress2reported two cases and suggested that
