Abstract
A previously reported two-dimensional model calculation indicates that the outward flux from a collapsing body does not become infinite at the horizon. The contrary interpretation rests on a physically irrelevant distinction between "radiation" (or "particles") and "static vacuum polarization." Under our interpretation, the Hawking thermal radiation originates mostly outside the collapsing body. Keywords
