Abstract
Type 2 diabetes mellitus, a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States, has increased in incidence in recent years, and the mean age at diagnosis has dropped.1Type 2 diabetes is a particular problem among African American women, among whom the incidence rate is twice that of US white women.2 Obesity is the strongest modifiable risk factor for type 2 diabetes,2,3 and much of the excess incidence in African American women is due to their high levels of overweight and obesity.4 It is important to identify modifiable factors that will lead to weight loss or that will reduce risk of type 2 diabetes regardless of whether weight loss occurs.
