Abstract
The gasification of a single particle of porous char surrounded by a boundary layer with oxygen and water vapor in its environment, taking into consideration the six main reactions along with the appropriate heat and mass transport effects, is considered using a shell‐progressive model. Much can be done analytically, and the numerical treatment of the model equations for a variety of parameters elucidates the structure of the problem which is much more complicated than anticipated, in spite of the fact that the model is a relatively simple one. The flame front of burning hydrogen and carbon monoxide can be at the core surface, in the ash layer, or in the boundary layer depending upon the ambient conditions of temperature and oxygen concentration. Keywords
