Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase and Hemoglobin Types in Cattle

Abstract
Erythrocyte G-6-PD in 207 cattle was studied for its activity and starch gel electrophoretic variants. Hemoglobin variants were also studied by paper electrophoresis. The electrophoretic pattern of erythrocytic G-6-PD was identical in all cattle, regardless of whether G-6-PD activity was normal or deficient. Two embryos of 4 and 5 months' gestation, both with normal activity, also had electrophoretic patterns similar to the two-band pattern of adults. The Hb-A and Hb-B alleles were present in all comparison groups, with Hb-A being most frequent. The fetuses manifested only fetal hemoglobin. The genetic, epidemiological, and clinical implications of G-6-PD deficiency and hemoglobin variants are discussed with reference to other animal species and man. Copyright © 1971.
