Abstract
The influence of torsion and stiess on the structural elements of Bobshaw and Delta- pine cotton was investigated. Slip phenomena between growth layers were noted; in particular, that between the winding layer and the outer secondary growth layers seems to be important. Changes in the fiber due to torsion and longitudmal stress are dis cussed. Treatment of the fibers with dimethylol ethylene urea or melamme formaldehyde was found to have a distinet influence on the torsion behavfor of the fiber. The useful ness of special optical techniques. particularly near-dark field, fluorescence dichroism, and ton etelung is discussed. The ton etching method can be successfully used to locate resmior cross-links in the cotton fiber. Keywords
