Abstract
Sixty-two strains of A. variabilis and 21 of A. kotschyi collected in Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria and Turkey were crossed with a common pollen parent (A. variabilis var. intermedia KU 13-3), and their F1 were analyzed with respect to chromosome pairing and pollen fertility. Chromosome pairing varied with strain. A. variabilis and A. kotschyi were tentatively classified into 2 and 3 pairing types, respectively. Main factor of variation in chromosome structure of A. variabilis was reciprocal translocation. This and other factors in intraspecific chromosome variation are discussed. A. kotschyi greatly differs from A. variabilis.
