STUDIES ON ROOT GROWTH IN SEEDLINGS OF A TROPICAL MANGROVE TREE SPECIES

Abstract
The influence of propagule length, plantation depth, soil type and irrigants on root growth of Rhizophora spp. was studied. Propagule lengths of 25–30 cm for R. apiculata and 25-40 cm for R. mucronata planted to a depth of one third of their length in a siltyclay substratum irrigated with 15 g.r sea water for R. mucronata and fresh water for R. apiculata showed better rooting and establishment of mangrove seedlings in nursery conditions.
