Abstract
A mutant of E. coli (strain K-12) requires glutamic acid, aspartic acid, lysine and proline for growth in a glucose-mineral salts medium. In an acetate-mineral salts medium no additions are necessary. Glucose inhibits growth in acetate medium, the inhibition being reversed partially by succinate or the above amino acid mixture. Cells grown in amino acid-glucose medium oxidize acetate if glucose disappears prior to harvest of cells. If glucose remains at the end of the growth period, the cells require the addition of fumarate for acetate oxidation. Glucose may prevent synthesis or storage of a dicarboxylic acid.
