On the meteoritic component of stratospheric aerosols

Abstract
The chemical analysis of aerosols collected at 19–21 km altitude on a polystyrene filter is reported. S and/or CI, Fe, Na and Cr were detected. The mixing ratio of sulfur containing particulates at this altitude is ≤ 2.9 times 10−9 g S/g dry air. The Fe/Na ratio is 1.2 ± 1.2 similar to that of crustal rocks. The chondritic meteorite component of the collected Fe and Na is < 10%, and the annual influx of submicron chondritic material to the earth is estimated to be < 9 times 104 metric tons.
