Abstract
The management of edema that develops in the course of intrinsic renal disease is challenging and often unsuccessful. As with other difficult‐to‐treat syndromes, a common error is to overtreat. This is another circumstance in which treatment is prescribed for the needs of the physician, not the patient. The information needed to make a reasonable choice of therapy is available. Inherent in this opinion is the fact that no treatment is sometimes the treatment of choice. I will state what I believe to be the facts of the formation of edema in renal disease and the mechanism of natriuretic therapy. The purpose of this discussion is to equip the reader with information I think essential to the natriuretic therapy of renal disease. Keywords
