On the Determination of Residual Stresses in Tubes

Abstract
Analytical expressions are proposed, from which the circumferential and longitudinal residual stresses present in a tube may be found by measurement of changes in curvature after slitting and layer removal. The effect of variation of the tube length, previously thought to be anomalous, is satisfactorily explained by the present analysis. The methods of measuring residual stress which were proposed by Davidenkov, Sachs and Espey, and Treuting and Read, are examined in detail and are shown to be inaccurate in certain circumstances.
