Abstract
An extensive modification of the metric system has been adopted by clinical laboratories in many countries and plans are being formulated to make a similar change in the United States. This adaptation is the International System of Units (Le Systeme International d''Unites), usually abbreviated S.I. units. Whereas the metric system uses the centimeter, the gram and the second as basic units, the international system uses the meter, the kilogram and the second as well as 4 other basic units of thermodynamic temperature, electric current, luminous intensity and amount of substance. This article describes the units and conventions used in the S.I. system and presents tables of reference values for hematology, blood chemistry, urine chemistry and semen analysis. The tables include conventional units, the corresponding S.I. units and factors for converting conventional into S.I. units.
