Abstract
In many degree courses, not all candidates are assessed on a common set of examinations. The inclusion of a choice of optional subjects introduces a difficulty of harmonization of standards. This paper describes a method whereby an additive adjustment of the average mark in each subject may be calculated, by a self‐consistent procedure using as data the marks of all students in all examinations taken into account. Examples are presented showing the effects of the procedure in practice. It is suggested that a revised class list based on adjusted marks gives a fairer indication of the overall relative merits of the candidates.
