Broadband access to the home on copper

Abstract
This paper reviews the technologies, potential markets, applications, and architectures for two-way wireless broadband access. Several significant hurdles are examined, and the technologies that have the potential to overcome them are noted. Also discussed are the following four elements, which represent the key enablers for two-way wireless broadband access: radio components and systems operating at microwave and millimeter-wave frequencies; air interfaces that robustly support high-bit-rate digital links; digital signal processing algorithms that encode, compress, and decode multimedia information; and microelectronic components for both radio and digital processing functions that enable fixed and portable multimedia terminals.
