Abstract
DURING a twelve-month period in 1994–95, a pilot demonstration project was undertaken to investigate the experience of seventeen small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) implementing the Regulation (EEC No 1836/93): the Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS). The purpose of the pilot study was to identify the barriers and opportunities faced by SMEs when they implemented formalised environmental management systems (EMSs) such as EMAS, ISO 14001 and other similar initiatives. The pilot study also provided recommendations on the type of assistance necessary to aid SMEs' achievement and registration to EMS standards.
