Group Counseling with Bereaving Elderly

Abstract
With the growing number of people living into their 60s and 70s, the study of the process of bereavement and its effect on the elderly is capturing increased attention. This paper reports on a model of group counseling employed with recently widowed older adults who requested counseling to cope with the adjustment process. The model used a cognitive/supportive orientation, with coleaders functioning as therapists, facilitators, and educators. Results of the evaluation indicate that the intervention was both helpful and effective to participants in adjusting to loss of their spouse. Recommendations are made for the structure, composition, and leadership of bereavement groups for older adults, as well as suggestions for future research.
