Abstract
Twenty-four lambs, six per treatment, were used in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments to determine the effects of heating and adding gossypol to soybean protein. Heating alone or the addition of 1% gossypol acetic acid had no significant effect upon the digestibility of protein, however the combination significantly reduced protein digestibility. Urinary nitrogen excretion was increased when gossypol was added to the soybean protein, but nitrogen retention was reduced significantly only when the protein-gossypol mixture was autoclaved.
