Bilateral attenborough total knee replacement as a single procedure

Abstract
A series of 19 cases of simultaneous bilateral Attenborough Total Knee Replacement is presented. This semi-constrained prosthesis is ideal for this procedure as early mobilization is possible. In comparison to the available series of unilateral replacement, there has been no indication of an increase in any of the usual complications met in this type of surgery. This procedure is recommended for severe bilateral knee arthritis as it not only saves a second anaesthetic, but it helps rehabilitation and reduces the total hospital stay. Eine Serie von 19 Fällen eines einzeitigen doppelseitigen Kniegelenkersatzes mit der Attenborough-Prothese wird vorgestellt. Diese Prothese ist für die doppelseitige Operation besonders geeignet, weil sie eine frühzeitige Mobilisation erlaubt. Im Vergleich mit verfügbaren Serien des einseitigen Kniegelenkersatzes fanden sich keine Anzeichen für eine Zunahme derüblichen Komplikationen. Der einzeitige doppelseitige Kniegelenkersatz wird daher bei schweren bilateralen Kniegelenkveränderungen empfohlen, weil nicht nur eine Narkose erspart wird, sondern auch Rehabilitation und Krankenhausaufenthalt verkürzt werden.
