Abstract
This study was done on the anterior teeth of 2 Macacus rhesus monkeys. At the time of sacrifice, the animals presented several stages of exfoliation and emergence. The specimens were routinely sectioned and stained. The emerging permanent tooth was found either directly beneath the deciduous tooth, labially or lingually. The resorption of the deciduous root corresponded to the direction of its emerging successor. The odontogenic epithelium of the gingival sulcus repaired the wound caused by exfoliation of the deciduous tooth. The oral mucosa then replaced the odontogenic epithelium. The sulcus epithelium of the deciduous tooth did not participate in the formation of the sulcus of the succedaneous tooth.
