Abstract
The drinking problem in Finnish society is far from uncommon and has worsened with an increase in economic welfare. In a multicenter trial 105 male out-patients, aged 20-60 yr, who had voluntarily sought treatment for alcohol withdrawal symptoms at 5 Finnish A-clinics or alcoholism treatment centers were entered into the study. The patients were randomly allocated to 2 treatments, carbamazepine [CBZ] and placebo, a double-blind technique being employed. CBZ may be an alternative treatment in the ambulatory treatment of alcohol withdrawal symptoms particularly because: it has no interaction with alcohol; its metabolization in the liver of alcoholics is not affected; it has no dependence-inducing properties; and it seems to decrease the target of alcohol withdrawal symptoms and to speed up the return of ability of work. The mechanism of action still remains to be determined. This publication has 1 reference indexed in Scilit:
