Elastic Torsional Analysis of Irregular Shapes

Abstract
A direct stiffness (finite element) solution method for the torsional analysis of shafts is presented. The technique is applicable to prismatic shafts (linear elastic material) of arbitrary cross-sectional shapes (single or multiple connected bodies) that are free to warp. The analysis yields the torsional stiffness, shear stress distribution, and warping function distribution for the shaft. The accuracy of the analysis is demonstrated by the consideration of problems with known solutions.
