Scattering of Neutrons fromO16in the 2.2- to 4.2-MeV Energy Range

Abstract
We have measured the differential cross sections for scattering of neutrons from O16 at some 14 energies between 2.2- and 4.2-MeV neutron energy by detecting scattered neutrons. In the vicinity of the 3.77-MeV peak in the total cross section of O16, we redetermined the total cross section with a 5-keV energy spread. From a phase-shift analysis of our data and other data taken from the literature, we assign resonance parameters for seven states of O17 between 7.30- and 8.21-MeV excitation energy as follows (in order: excitation energy of O17, J value, parity, and reduced width in single-particle units 2μa2): 7.30 (32+, 0.23), 7.67 (32, 0.07), 7.691 (72, 0.03), 7.694 (32+, 0.001), 7.91 (½-,0.02), 8.08 (32+, 0.03), and 8.21 (32, 0.01). Our finding the narrow 32+ state at 7.694 MeV has removed a difficulty in resonance-parameter assignment at the 3.77-MeV neutron energy peak in the total cross section of O16.
