Abstract
A method of constructing plane wave spectral representations for diffraction wavefunctions is described. The construction uses only the geometrical data available from the ray trajectories and Keller's ray diffraction coefficient, similar to Keller's geometrical theory of diffraction, but the resulting wavefunctions are globally uniform under high frequency asymptotics, correcting the well known deficiencies of the geometrical theory at caustics and shadow boundaries. The method is of very general validity, but we concentrate here on scalar plane wave diffraction by an aperture in a plane screen. Keywords
