Abstract
The crystal‐field term symbols for the state and the three lowest 4I states of Nd3+ in CaWO4 are identified with the irreducible representations of the double group of S4 symmetry. The assignments were made after an analysis of the polarized fluorescence of Nd3+ in CaWO4 compensated by Na+. The selection rules corresponding to electric‐dipole transitions were applied after establishing the multipolarity through polarized absorption.
