Abstract
Lubrication of a line contact between two cylinders is studied. The viscosity of the oil is assumed to vary with pressure and temperature. The oil is assumed to solidify at a certain pressure, which is dependent on the temperature. The solidified oil is assumed to have a shear strength independent of pressure and temperature. Continuity conditions for the cavitation boundary, the boundary between liquid oil and solidified oil, and the boundary between sliding and nonsliding solidified oil are given. Numerical calculations of height functions, pressure distributions, and load capacities are made for the isothermal case. Theoretical and experimental pressure fields and height functions are compared.
