The gas content of the tissues of sugar cane was determined by special apparatus. The relative abundance of O in the tissues apparently varied inversely with the growth capacity of the tissues, with the moisture content of the bud tissues, and with their cryoscopic coefficient. The relative abundance of oxidases was determined by the intensity of the reaction with guaiac tincture. The younger the tissues the greater the oxidase content, the greater the consumption of O, and the more abundant the elimination of CO2.
