Abstract
Research with the Halstead Category Test has suggested that the test measures the ability of the individual to plan ahead and exercise judgement. Likewise, the Picture Arrangement subtest of the WAIS-R has been viewed as a measure of planning ability. It was hypothesized that scores on the Category Test and Picture Arrangement subtest would be significantly negatively related given their common assessment of planning ability. Scores on these two measures were examined for 71 case examples presented by Golden, Osmon, Moses and Berg (1981). Partial correlation analyses were performed controlling for age, level of education, and Performance IQ scores. The results indicated that once age, education, and Performance IQ scores were controlled for, the correlation between Category Test errors and Picture Arrangement subtest scores only approached significance. The results of this study suggest that the two measures may assess different cognitive processes. Keywords
